CSUN Cross Country Enters NCAA Regional Friday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams continue post-season action Friday when the Matadors enter the NCAA West Regional. Sacramento State is the host as the meet will be conducted on the Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento.

The 6k women’s race gets underway at 10 a.m. The 10k men’s race starts at 11 a.m. The link to the Live Stats will be available on GoMatadors.com.

Scheduled to compete in the regional are Arizona State, Boise State, California, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Hawai’i, Idaho, Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, Oregon, Oregon State, Pacific, Pepperdine, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, San Diego, San Diego State, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Seattle U, Saint Mary’s, Stanford, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, UNLV, Washington, and Washington State.

To advance to next week’s NCAA Division I National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., teams must race in one of nine regional championships to qualify for the event with the top two teams from each region will automatically advance. 13 teams will then be chosen as at-large selections. 38 individual runners on non-qualifying teams will advance to nationals.

CSUN is coming off the Oct. 29 Big West Championship where redshirt freshman Quinn Garity was the top finishing men’s Matador (18th). He recorded a time of 24:38.2 which is a new season-best and is the fourth-fastest by a CSUN runner at the Division I level since 2000 on an 8k course. Cal State Fullerton’s Sam Ayala took home first-place (23:34.5). As a team, CSUN finished sixth (183), tying the 2017 team for the Matadors’ best team placing since the squad joined the Big West in 2001. UC Santa Barbara (38) was the Big West champion.

On the women’s side, redshirt freshman Leann Hamilton was the top finishing CSUN entry. Hamilton ran a season-best time of 23:59.8 to place 61st overall (54th-place points). Trinity Ruelas (20:09.0) of Cal State Fullerton was the individual champion. CSUN finished ninth (300) in the 10-team race. UC Davis (26) won the Big West team championship.
