NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN returns to women’s tennis action this week with a pair of duals. The Matadors host Big West leader UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 1 p.m. before heading to UC San Diego on Sunday for a 3 p.m. start.
The Gauchos are 6-0 in league play this season, 7-3 overall. Shakhnoza Khatamova leads the team in singles victories with nine (9-2). Khatamova and Kira Reuter are 4-2 in doubles which is second on the Gauchos following a 5-2 mark that has been set by Marta Gonzalez-Balbe and Camille Kiss. This is the 35th time that CSUN and UCSB are playing women’s tennis with the Gauchos leading the all-time series 27-7.
Playing at the Division I level for the first time, UC San Diego is 2-7, 1-5 in Big West competition. Ella Pachl is tops on the team in singles wins with three (3-4). Pachl is one of three players leading the team with three doubles victories. The Matadors and the Tritons are playing for the first time since the 2015 season. CSUN leads the all-time series 7-1.
CSUN defeated UC Riverside for the 18th consecutive time (dating back to 2004) as the Matadors handed the Highlanders a 4-1 loss last Sunday. The victory improved the Matadors to 6-3 overall, 3-2 in Big West duals.
Doubles began with the Highlanders’ No. 1 team of Tia Elpusan and Hanh Pham defeating Victoria Santibañez Luna and Ana Fraile Toboso 6-0. The Matadors bounced back, taking the doubles point with wins at No. 2 doubles by Sasha Turchak and Magdalena Hedrzak and No. 3 doubles by Jacquie Tan and Jenna Dorian.
Turchak opened singles play by defeating Natalie Shamma at No. 3 in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Dorian defeated Sofia Lazzaroni 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5. Elpusan got UC Riverside on the board when she defeated Fraile Toboso 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 1. Hedrzak clinched the dual for the Matadors when she defeated Mahli Silpachai 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match.
The win marked the 40th for CSUN in the all-time series against UCR in 41 tries since the teams began to play each other in 1982.
Looking ahead, due to testing protocols, the Cal Lutheran match scheduled for Thursday, Apr. 22 has been canceled and will not be made up.
