LAJOLLA, Calif.—The CSUN men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the UC San Diego Triton Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The Matador men won five individual events and one relay on the day.
For the third consecutive week, Mathieu Tshani won a jumping event. Tshani registered a career-best in the triple jump, 50-6 3/4.
For the second straight week, Quinn Garity recorded an individual victory in a distance race. At UCSD, Garity won the 3000m in a time of 8:38.13. His time is the second quickest in the 3000m by a CSUN freshman.
Ahmed Mohamed won the long jump with a leap of 21-9 1/2. Mohamed was second in the triple jump (46-2 3/4), and went :23.73 to finish fourth in the 200m.
Freshman Patrick Acholonu won the 100m in a time of :11.18.
De Marq Jaque ran a career outdoor-best in the 200m, :22.67, to win the event.
The 4x400m relay of Bryce Smith, Eric Vivanco, Jaylon Hartidge, and Jaque were victorious in a time of 3:22.65.
Smith completed the 1-2 in the 200 for CSUN as he was second in a time of :23.24.
Noah Contreras posted a career-best 4:01.45 to come in second in the 1500m.
Vivanco ran a career-best in the 400m (:48.91) to finish second in the 400m.
Jonathan Perez finished second in the hammer throw (153-1).
Miquel Buchanan was fourth in the 100m (:11.48).
Hartidge placed fourth in the 400m (:52.16).
Seven events were scored with CSUN finishing third (50). UC San Diego (56) was first, followed by UC Riverside (54).
Sameerah Evans won the lone individual event for the Matadors. She took home top-honors in the triple jump. She posted a leap of 40-0.
Brisa Guzman-Sanchez was second in the 100m hurdles after running :14.81. She turned around to come in seventh in 200m (:26.45).
Sonsoles Barba finished second in the long jump after posting a leap of 17-11 1/2. A senior, she later ran a career-best :26.42 to finish sixth in the 200m.
Aaryn Smith placed fifth in the 100m (:13.10).
Heidi Eligio ran a season-best 5:04.96 to finish sixth in the 1500m. Madyson Houseman competed in the 1500m for the first time in 2021 and placed seventh (5:16.42).
Brianna Kelpis was sixth in the long jump (16-8 3/4) and seventh in the shot put (37-1 3/4).
Ouanessa Nana lowered her season-best in the 800m by nearly three seconds to 2:23.57 to come in sixth in the race.
10 events were scored with CSUN finishing fourth with 50 points. San Diego State (99) was the team winner.

“We continue to see steady improvement from all event areas. Our jumpers led the way with three event wins. Quinn continues to impress me as he jumps into our top-10 in the 3000m. We will use the next two weeks to prepare for our last home meet of the season.”
The Matadors will be off until Friday, Apr. 23 when CSUN hosts the Matador Invitational.
