NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Interim head coach Trent Johnson has announced the signings of Darius Beane and Christian Gray to the CSUN Men’s Basketball team in 2021-22. Beane has played three seasons at the Division I level including the last two at Northern Illinois University while Gray, a graduate student, spent three seasons at Fresno State.

“We are excited to bring to CSUN two young men who are mature and experienced college basketball players,” said Johnson. “They are both battle-tested and have played key minutes for their previous teams. Darius has been well-coached, he played for his father Anthony Beane who was one heck of a basketball player. He gives us a dimension where I think he’s capable of being a really good defender and he’s explosive on the court. Christian is different than any forward we have and plays a lot bigger than his 6-6 frame. He puts it on the floor and gets to the rim as well.”
Darius Beane NIU
A 6-3 guard, Beane started 12 of 17 games in 2020-21 for Northern Illinois, averaging 9.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Seeing nearly 30 minutes a contest on the floor, Beane scored in double figures eight times this past season. Beane would post 7.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in 2019-20 as he helped NIU win a share of the Mid-American West Division championship.

Beane played one season at Southern Illinois University in 2018-19 and averaged 3.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in a career-high 32 appearances. Over his collegiate career, Beane has played in 78 Division I games, totaling 473 points (6.0 PPG), 263 rebounds (3.4 RPG) and 107 assists (1.4 APG).

Originally from Carbondale, Ill., Beane attended Carbondale High School where he totaled 1,617 career points and finished as the school’s sixth all-time leading scorer. He was named all-state twice as well as Player of the Year by the Southern Illinoisan.
Christian Gray Fresno State
Originally from Moreno Valley, Calif., Gray posted career-best averages of 5.3 points and 3.0 rebounds to go with a 58.9 field goal percentage (33-for-56) last season at Fresno State. The 6-6 forward appeared in 18 games, scoring in double figures twice and averaging 13.7 minutes per game. Gray made his Fresno State debut in 2018-19 and would redshirt a season later. In 45 career games, he tallied 141 points (3.1 PPG) and 129 rebounds (2.9 RPG).

Gray began his collegiate career at Salt Lake Community College where he averaged in double figures in scoring each season. As a sophomore, he averaged 13.4 points in helping lead the Bruins to the Scenic West Athletic Conference championship and an NJCAA Tournament berth.

Prior to his collegiate career, Gray prepped at John W. North High School in Riverside, Calif. He helped his team win the CIF Southern Section Division 1AA championship while he earned first-team All-CIF as a senior in 2016.

Beane and Gray join fellow transfers Onyi Eyisi (Fordham University) and Miles James (East Carolina University) and incoming freshman Nick Herrmann (Torrey Pines High School) as the newest members of the Matadors’ roster in 2021-22.
